Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
Greater Manchester ACF gives all its cadets of the correct age group a chance to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The DoE Award Scheme is run in parallel with the APC and therefore members of the Cadet Force get the best of both worlds because 90% of skills in the APC Syllabus counts toward their DoE.
This is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25, regardless of gender, background or ability. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.
Award Groups are run by your own Adult Instructors. Assessors may also come from within Greater Manchester ACF or from the community, all of whom are keen to share their skills, enthusiasm and organising abilities to help young people reach their potential.
It is a four-Section Programme with three progressive levels:
Bronze:- for those aged 14 and over.
Silver:- for those aged 15 and over.
Gold:- for those aged 16 and over.
The Sections involve:
Service:- Helping other people in the local community.
Expeditions:- Training for, planning and completing a journey on foot or horseback, by boat or cycle.
Skills:- Covering almost any hobby, skill or interest.
Physical Recreation:- sport, dance and fitness.
Residential Project:- Gold Award only.
The ACF is an 'Operating Authority' within the DoE Award who purchase RECORD BOOKS from the DoE and supply them to you (you need to buy a different one for each level of Award you do), plus you can also get a brilliant ENTRANCE PACK in the form of a personal organiser file containing heaps of useful info, activity log sheets, discount vouchers, an ID card, a CD-ROM 'Virtual Award Planner' to help you plan your Award.
After studying the each Section of the Award and deciding what you want to do, your DoE Officer will be able to help you if you get stuck off you go Remember it’s not a race, you should endevour to carry out the training for the right length of time
Use the Link at the Top Left to view the DoE Web site and look in each Section to choose your activities. Make a note of your plans then off you go! Remember to inform your DoE Officer as to what you're going to do, just so you don't waste any time on activities which won't count and just as important so that he or she can credit you with the skills that you pass within the APC Syllabus (Remember they run in paralell). Make sure that the activities you choose are in the right Section - Dance, for example, is a Physical Recreation activity, not a Skill!
Be sure to complete your Record Book as you go on, getting your DoE Officer or Assessor (sports coach, music teacher, someone with specialist knowledge etc) to sign each Section off, and to keep you Detachment Commander informed.
The Record Book has space for you to fill in your personal thoughts as you go along.
Most of all... HAVE FUN!
